How to Use Mirrors to Give an Effect of Spaciousness

Scientific studies have demonstrated that home owners who keep mirrors spaced around the house are more likely to do better in life and exhibit more confidence. As well as helping improve your self-confidence, mirrors help you with interior decorating issues, particularly if you do not have much space to play around with.

Interior decorating experts might advise you to deploy a large wall mirror if you want to give the effect of having more space or room. If it’s a case of a partition that is not as big as you would like it to be and you are not thrilled at the idea of breaking partitions or altering the entire furniture with something that might make the room seem wider, a few floor to ceiling mirrors can very well give the desired impression. By reflecting the complete room, mirrors will give the impression that there is double the room available.

But bear in mind, you cannot just go placing mirrors anywhere you feel like it. Mirrors cannot help if large items of furniture are blocking them, for example. Choose a wall that will give people fewer opportunities to see their reflections because this will reduce the illusion of space you are wanting to produce - opposite some fine oak bookcases might be an ideal spot.

Of course, mirrors are integral with certain items of furniture in certain rooms - vanity sinks, for instance, will come with a mirror which will increase the sense of space.

To create the best effect, study how the room is organized and identify those parts of it that are not likely to be opposite where people will sit. Don’t forget - the mirrors need not cover the entire surface of the wall, just the entire height. If you do it right, your floor to ceiling mirrors should give the illusion that there are entrances into other rooms, generating the illusion of space.
